description
The use of Nigella / black cumin has been known since ancient Babylon. The ancient Greeks and Romans attributed healing properties to black cumin for worms and snake bites.
Medieval herbal books and Paracelsius also mention black cumin as a remedy for asthma, flatulence and corns. In Indian recipes, black cumin is also said to help against diarrhea, indigestion and stomach cramps.
Black cumin, also known as Roman coriander, comes from the buttercup family and grows to a height of up to 70 cm. It is not related to cumin and real caraway.
Like many other spices that have been known since ancient times, black cumin is used in a variety of dishes. It has a slightly spicy note like pepper.
Try Mediterranean dishes with black cumin such as salad dressing, lentil salad, minced peppers, chicken hearts or a cheese salad. Soups also get an interesting new twist with black cumin, such as pumpkin soup or tomato soup.
Our tip: why not bake your own black cumin bread or flatbread or simply mix black cumin into your scrambled eggs next time?
